Nigerian Army Gives Reason For Arresting Nollywood Veteran Chiwetalu Agu

The Nigerian army has given its reasons for arresting Nollywood veteran actor Chiwetalu Agu.

The Army further said he was still in custody for further investigations.

On Thursday 7 October,  the actor was in a video being assaulted and taken away by men of the Nigerian army.

Reacting to the public outcry following his arrest, the  Nigerian Army has released a statement on Facebook saying Agu was arrested for soliciting support for the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOP)

“Troops of Nigerian Army(NA) have arrested one Chiwetalu Agu while inciting members of the public and soliciting for support for the proscribed Indegenous People of Biafra (IPOB),” part of the statement read.

“Dressed in a very well known attire of the proscribed group. Chiwetalu Agu was picked up for questioning while inciting members of the public to join the proscribed group.

“Though he attempted putting up some resistance when troops made effort to take him into custody, he was not assaulted or subjected to brutalization.”

The Army further said he was still in custody for further investigations.

The actor on Thursday intercepted by men of the Nigerian army. He was driving in his “Chinwetalu Agu Enterprise” van Thursday, at commercial Upper Iweka Road in Onitsha, Anambra state.

Agu was hauled off the van dressed in IPOB regalia and roughly shoved into the army vehicle. The soldiers also shot several times to disperse the crowd that had begun to gather as they arrested the movie veteran.

Chiwetalu Agu is not the only Igbo celebrity that have shown support for the IPOB movement. Actress Rita Edochie, rapper Zoro have also called for the release of their leader Nnamdi Kanu.
