The Super Falcons of Nigeria claimed their first win against South Korea at 2 – 0 on Wednesday in Grenoble. The victory set them up to advance to the next stage in the 2019 Women’s World Cup tournament in France.

After earning the first goal through an own-goal by South Korea’s Kim Do-yeun, Nigerian striker Asisat Oshoala owned the magic of the second goal.

Just as Nigeria had lost to Norway by 3 – 0 in the opening game, South Korea was beaten by 4-0 by hosts France. This second Group A game was also the last attempt at redemption, and Nigeria came through victorious. Consequently, this loss leaves South Korea, ranked 14th in the world, without a point or goal to its name.

In the first half, South Korea had started strong. Then just before the half-hour mark, ESPN reports that:

“….defender Kim Do-yeon miscued an effort to try to clear a long ball through the middle…”

“There was a lengthy Video Assistant Referee review to see whether Nigeria’s captain Desire Oparanozie might have brushed the ball with her hand as she headed to the goal, but there was no conclusive evidence to rule out the goal.”

The second half strike was a beautiful masterpiece just 15 minutes from half-time.

It’s not surprising that Golden Ball and Golden Boot winner Oshoala is responsible for this feat. Her reputation is unbecoming as she championed the breakaway attack that earned Nigeria her second goal.

24-year-old Oshoala is also a three-time African women’s Footballer of the Year. She ran a half-length of the field and brushed past a defender, rounded past the goalkeeper and scored with a perfect angle.

This marks the fourth win for the African champion in eight World Cup finals appearances. It’s also a chance for the African team to go a second round for the second time.

After the game, Oshoala tells the competition’s official website:

“At first, I think we were a little bit scared of losing and going out. But after a while, we just decided to go for it. I always say that I’m never under pressure — I just go on the pitch and do my job. It’s an 11-player game, and I just look to enjoy the game, have fun and do the right thing for my team. The group is wide open now. We just have to concentrate now on making sure we get the points we need against France.”

The Super Falcons were thrashed in the opening game against Norway by 3-0 on Saturday.
