Nigeria has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Israeli and Japanese EV makers to begin producing electric cars in the country.
As reported by Techpoint Africa, the agreement was signed on Thursday, August 25, 2022 by the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) on behalf of the government.
Peramare Enterprise and SIXAI are involved in the partnership. While we found no further info on the former, SIXAI is an Israeli company and leader in system integration solutions for industrial challenges. Its online profile claims that it integrates advanced tech and AI to solve challenges and build a better future for humanity.

Ayal Raz of Peramare Enterprise said that after the MOU, they plan to begin setting up assembly structures in the first quarter of 2023. Then, they would start building vehicles completely.
Meanwhile, despite the jubilatory mood that the news is supposed to bring, there is skepticism in the Nigerian tech space. For example, head of e-mobility at MAX NG, Tolulope Williams, said: “There are a lot of steps to deploying EVs; the charging infrastructure and access to energy are extremely important.”
One major problem that industry analysts foresee is the poor state of electricity supply in the country. In addition to that, there is also the fact that bad roads could create special problems for EVs, seeing that they are heavier than regular fuel-powered cars.
With EVs getting popular worldwide, it is just a matter of time before it comes to Nigeria.
