Memorial spaceflight company, Celestis, is sending the ashes of late Star Trek veteran Nichelle Nichols to space aboard its Vulcan Centaur. Her ashes would be joined by those of other former Star Trek stars like the show creator Gene Roddenberry and his wife, Majel Barrett.
In addition, the ashes of James Doohan, who played Scotty, and the visual effects artist Douglas Trumbull, would be part of the space-bound materials.
Celestis is sending the ‘dream and memory’ of departed loved ones into deep space, farther than the earth-moon system. The rocket is also carrying other things like DNA samples, names, messages, and pictures submitted by users worldwide. Its website says that it stopped accepting reservations for its $12,500-seat Voyage Flight from August 31, 2022.

Nichelle Nichols’ son donated her ashes after she passed at 89 in July 2022. She had been notable in so many ways during her time. For example, she is largely credited as the first black woman to hold a major TV role in the Hollywood film industry. Then, when she served as NASA’s advocate, she pushed for more underrepresented people to join the agency.
Much of the public terminology that Celestis uses are from the StarTrek franchise, so it only makes sense that it is choosing to honor it in a proper way. It is not clear if the capsules used to store the items would ever be retrieved.
