The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has revealed that it opened an investigation into Tesla after receiving two separate complaints that the steering wheels of its 2023 Model Y SUVs fell off while driving.
The auto safety regulators began the evaluation on March 4 and will be examining about 120,000 vehicles, according to documents it shared on Wednesday.
One of the complaints made its way to Twitter where a family shared their experience of their car’s steering wheel falling off while on the road.

Tesla replaced the vehicle in the above report, after, as The Verge alleged, quoting a repair cost of $103.96. The two vehicles were delivered without a retaining bolt that was supposed to hold the steering wheel column.
Depending on the outcome of the investigation, Tesla may have to recall the affected Model Y vehicles if the incident is dangerous. Of course, car recalls are nothing new to Tesla and other EV makers. We have seen this happen several times, even without a federal body investigating the company.
