New Zealand has declared that the country now has zero COVID-19 cases and has lifted many of its previous lockdown restrictions. Here is how New Zealand was able to beat the pandemic.
New Zealand had gone into lockdown mode for the first time on 25th March 2020 and the country set up a four-stage alert system. This meant that from the end of March 2020, businesses, schools, and parks stayed closed. People also stayed indoors.
In April, New Zealand began slowly opening essential businesses like food vendors, and not long after, some non-essential businesses also started opening their doors. The lockdown procedure was effective as numbers began dwindling. The authorities also followed the improvements by relaxing some of the protocols.
New Zealand authorities had speculated that it will likely start applying level one lockdown by 22nd June 2020. But as BBC reports, the country currently has no case and this is why it is going into lockdown level one stage now. This stage involves resumption of activities as normal, only the country’s borders will stay closed for now.

In total, New Zealand had recorded a total of 1,154 COVID-19 cases while 22 people died as a result of the virus. In making the announcement, Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern says:
“While we’re in a safer, stronger position, there’s still no easy path back to pre-Covid life, but the determination and focus we have had on our health response will now be vested in our economic rebuild.
“While the job is not done, there is no denying this is a milestone. So can I finish with a very simple, ‘Thank you, New Zealand’.”
If there is one thing that New Zealand’s zero COVID-19 cases proves; it is that it is possible for a country to beat the virus. However, it would likely have not worked if some people had flouted the rules that the government put in place.
Now, no one can frown at the fact that the Prime Minister, Ardern confessed that she did ‘a little dance’. In fact, the world will be willing to dance along to whatever tune she is playing to this victory.
