Netflix to roll out cheaper ad-supported plans in November

Netflix is rolling out its planned ad-supported tiers, called Basic with Ads, in November 2022. The streaming company has not said when it would be available in Nigeria but it is kicking off with users in Canada and Mexico on November 1.

In the US, users will start to see it as an option on November 3, and it will cost $6.99 per month. Per its blog announcement, the initial release will reach only 12 countries with Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Spain, and the UK, being the other nine.

“Our current plans and members will not be impacted. Basic with Ads complements our existing ad-free Basic, Standard and Premium plans,” Netflix said.

Additionally, Basic with Ads will be just like the old Basic plan with some minor differences. For example, there will be an average of between four to five minutes of ads every hour. Also, limited number of movies and TV shows won’t be available to users on this plan. Not to forget, you will not be able to download titles to watch offline as well.

Meanwhile, for advertisers, this will be an opportunity to reach a diverse audience with 15 or 30 seconds ads.

“To help advertisers reach the right audience — and ensure our ads are more relevant for consumers — we’ll offer broad targeting capabilities by country and genre (e.g. action, drama, romance, sci-fi). Advertisers will also be able to prevent their ads from appearing on content that might be inconsistent with their brand (e.g. s*x, n****y or graphic violence),” the streaming giant further said.

Compare to the $9.99 per month option of the regular Basic plan, the Basic with Ads tier makes sense if you are trying to save on streaming costs. Since many people have several subscriptions that they pay monthly, it is helpful to cut expenses where you can.

However, for someone who is in it for the viewing pleasure, 30-second ads interrupting your enjoyment every 12 minutes or so can be unnerving. We can’t wait to see how many people go along with this new offering.

Netflix began planning a cheaper tier after 2022 proved that it was no longer alone in the streaming business. Losing subscribers was the final straw and the company began trying to reinvent itself, looking for ways to add users and make more money.

The Basic with Ads plan is just one of the many new features tat will be coming to the platform. It is also working on extra charges for adding multiple users to one account.
