NCDC, Lagos State Govt Warns Against Self Medicating With Chloroquine To Treat Covid-19

The National Centre For Disease Control (NCDC) has advised Nigerians against the self-administration of Chloroquine in a bid to fight the Coronavirus.

 

In a tweet, The NCDC revealed that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has not approved the use of the drug for the treatment of the virus.

 

 

Also, they stated that as of now, scientists are doing research to ascertain the safety of the drug as well its efficacy against the Coronavirus.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, says the state government will conduct a clinical trial on the effectiveness of Chloroquine at the COVID-19 update yesterday.

Abayomi stated that the clinical trial is aimed at ascertaining if Chloroquine can in fact cure Coronavirus as the news making the rounds claim.

Furthermore, he added that the state was still observing the global research space. This will define the efficiency of the drug in the control of the disease.

 

“We do not have any hard evidence that Chloroquine is effective in preventing or managing COVID-19. We are watching the global research space to clearly define its efficiency in COVID-19″. Abayomi said.

 

According to him, Chloroquine has significant side effects and should not be used without medical supervision as it may cause more harm than good.

 

He added that the public should await his directives for the use of Chloroquine.
