Why NASA DART slamming into asteroid Dimorphos is important

NASA Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) is the world’s first planetary defense tech demonstration and it completed its mission of deflecting an asteroid in space.

If you saw the movie Don’t Look Up (starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, and others), then you likely have an idea of why the mission is important.

The DART had cost $325 million and weighed 1,200 pounds, yet, it was just crashed into the Dimorphos asteroid like it was nothing. Likely, that is because it was meant to.

The mission had taken 306 days to complete and the result that the NASA hopes for is that the crash changes the orbit pattern of the asteroid. If so, then, it means that we could have an asteroid deflecting technology in existence.

The Dimorphos asteroid is not a life-threatening one, and neither is the much larger one that it was found orbiting, which scientists called Didymos. This is why the NASA researchers believe it is quite right for the test.

“This was a really hard technology demonstration to hit an asteroid we’ve never seen before,” DART coordination lead, Nancy Chabot said. But she said that she was certain that other scientists on her team were as excited as she was.

Following the crash, the scientists will continue to monitor the asteroid’s speed with powerful telescopes to determine just how much its course was altered. They will also investigate the crash site images and more.
