“My Big Fat Greek Wedding” Star Actor Michael Constantine Dies At 94

Michael Constantine, best-known for his roles in My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Room 222, is dead. His representative confirmed on Wednesday 8th September that the actor died last week of natural causes. He was 94 years old."My Big Fat Greek Wedding" Star Actor Michael Constantine Dies At 94

Constantine worked as an actor for over 50 years in both film and television. In 1970, he won an Emmy Award for playing school principal Seymour Kaufman in the ABC comedy “Room 222” from 1969 to 1974. He was nominated for that same role the following year.

The actor is best remembered for his portrayal of overprotective yet loving, Gus Portokalos in the 2002 comedy “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”.  His role earned him a SAG Awards nomination for outstanding performance by the cast of a theatrical motion picture.

He later reprised the role in a short-lived 2003 TV adaptation of the film, “My Big Fat Greek Life”, as well as the 2016 film sequel “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2”.

Constantine also made appearances on a variety of high-profile series throughout the years, such as “The Twilight Zone”, “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”, “The Love Boat”, and “Law & Order”.

Following news of his passing, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” writer and star Nia Vardalos took to Twitter to share a heartfelt tribute to Constantine.

“Michael Constantine, the dad to our cast-family, a gift to the written word, and always a friend. Acting with him came with a rush of love and fun. I will treasure this man who brought Gus to life. He gave us so much laughter and deserves a rest now. We love you Michael,” she wrote.
