Multichoice to stop password-sharing on its streaming platforms

If you have been sharing passwords with friends and family on Multichoice-owned streaming platforms (DStv, GOtv, and Showmax), that time may be up.

The company is leveraging the expertise of its subsidiary, Irdeto, to launch a new product that discourages password-sharing. According to TechCabal, the small company has been making security software solutions since 1997 for game and video streaming firms.

The new product, under digital rights management solution, will allow operators determine how many users can stream simultaneously from one account. It will also determine how many devices (and types) can connect to an account.

Password-sharing has become a headache for streaming companies because it threatens their source of revenue: new paying subscribers. Netflix, the biggest streaming platform, has pinpointed this behaviour as the source of its dropping subscribers count.

However, checking password-sharing is no easy task. For one, a user may choose to stream from multiple devices like their smartphone, tablet, PC, or smart TV. Limiting a user to one device, is not ideal and could discourage customers. However, it opens the service to exploitation.

This is why Irdeto’s product is important because it will help Multichoice create different pricing tiers for accounts with multiple users. This is something that Netflix already does, but it has not stopped people from sharing passwords.

The new tech has not reached Showmax yet, but the company is starting it right away with DStv and GOtv platforms.
