MTN Launches 5G Connection In Zambia

MTN has begun 5G network operation in several parts of Zambia after completing an experiment that began in January this year.

The telco giant is looking at improving connectivity in Africa with this initiative. MTN Zambia CEO Bart Hofker said that the 5G service currently covers 65% of people in Lusaka, Kitwe, and Ndola. It is also available in Chingola, Solwezi, and Kalumbila regions

Zambia is a mining and manufacturing giant, having the world’s highest-grade copper deposits, and MTN believes that investors in the country would see the advantage of the high-speed internet access that comes with 5G.

The company will follow up the launch with increment of areas served until the entirety of Lusaka, Kitwe, and Ndola are accounted for. It plans to achieve this by the middle of 2023. Additionally, it will expand access to other regions in the country.

By 2023, MTN and its partners plan to have 145 rural sites (45 to be accomplished by the end of 2022) as part of its rural connectivity programme.

Meanwhile, it is not abandoning the work it has been doing in the nation since it first began operating in 2005. The company says that it will improve the existing 3G and 4G infrastructures and offer them to more underserved areas.

In August, the telco had launched 5G service in seven cities in Nigeria. Earlier, it had begun operating the service in its homeland, South Africa, and neighbouring nations like Kenya, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Tanzania, and the island nations of Madagascar, Mauritius and the Seychelles.
