Elon Musk: There Could Be More Robots Than Humans Soon

Tesla and SpaceX boss, Elon Musk, shared a prediction for the future that could see robots outnumber humans. He did not go into details if this was going to be good or bad, but it is not the first time he is saying something like this.

Musk has been a firm believer in technology and his companies are market leaders in various fields. Besides Tesla and SpaceX, he also co-founder OpenAI, an artificial intelligence-focused company, and Neuralink, a company that seeks to merge neuroscience and tech. In addition, Tesla is working on a humanoid robot that is still in early stages of production.

All his endeavours are portrayed under the umbrella of making human life better. However, it hasn’t stopped many of us from worrying what sort of future it would be when there are more robots than humans.

Musk’s latest comment was a reply to a Tweet discussing the increasing efficiency of robots at Amazon, one of America’s biggest employers. Sam Korus, Director of Research Autonomous Technology and Robotics at ARK Invest, pointed out robots had increased in capability by 33 times in the last 7 years.

“7 years ago the winning robot of the Amazon picking challenge was on track to pick 30 items in an hour. Now Amazon has a robot prototype that can pick 1,000 items per hour,” they wrote.

The original post and Musk’s reply attracted attention as several users started sharing instances of robots already springing up in place of humans. Apart from some worries about losing jobs to robots, there is also the common fear of a dystopian future where AI goes rogue and overtakes humans.

With capabilities for innovation growing at increased rates and many other companies like Xiaomi, Amazon, and more working on building robots. It does not seem like a far-fetched idea that there could be more of them than us sometime in the future.

What do you think about this? Is the rise of robots something to worry about?
