Mo Abudu Gives Reasons For Making Hushpuppi Film Following Backlash

Film mogul and EbonyLife boss Mo Abudu have explained why she’s co-producing a film based on flamboyant fraudster Ramon Abbas better known as Hushpuppi.Influencer to criminal: Rise and fall of Instagram star Hushpuppi

In June 2020, INTERPOL allegedly arrested Hushpuppi for scamming and laundering money of over $100million originally for Native Americans during the Corona Virus Pandemic. He’s currently facing up to 20 years of jail time.

When news broke that a Hushpuppi film was coming, the producers; Mo Abudu and US Company Will Packer studios came under heavy backlash as many criticised them for glorifying fraud.

In her defense, Abudu wrote a lengthy post on her Instagram saying that there’s always a lesson from every story.

“Secondly, if we do not tell this story, someone else will. And to ensure that this story is told with authenticity, a Nigerian storyteller with our pedigree needs to be involved.”Mo Abudu Gives Reasons For Making Hushpuppi Film Following Backlash

“Too often, these types of characters are one-dimensional and feed into the worst stereotypes.” she also added.

Hushpuppi’s story is based on a real person whose story is already partly known to the world. But the film gives us a real chance to tell a cautionary tale about a character formed by his environment and life choices.

“The films of Martin Scorsese are a great example of a filmmaker telling richly layered stories of criminal characters from his heritage that we’ve all grown to love, without ever creating the impression that all Italian-Americans are members of the mafia. Needless to say, all Nigerians are not 419 scam artists.”

US company Will Packer Productions, and Mo Abudu’s EbonyLife Studios acquired rights to make the film. It is based on Bloomberg’s article on Hushpuppi; Influencer to Criminal: Rise and Fall of Instagram star Hushpuppi.

Both companies competitively won the rights and set up the project at Universal Pictures.

Packer and James Lopez will produce through their Will Packer Productions, with Abudu using her own EbonyLife TV.
