The major difference between PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X really is the GPU and SSD. Microsoft opts for a custom AMD RDNA 2-based GPU just like the Play Station 5. However, the Xbox Series X provides 12 teraflops of power with 52 compute units at 1.825GHz each while the PlayStation 5 falls short at 10.28 teraflops of power with 36 compute units at 2.23GHz.

Sony PlayStation 5 system architect, Mark Cerny tells Eurogamer that Sony set a power budget tied to the thermal limits of the console. This will translate to mean that the performance of the console will depend on the game being played on it.

On the processor side, Series X wins hands down. Its AMD Zen 2 (3.8GHz, eight-core) processor is much better than the PlayStation 5’s AMD Zen 2 (3.8GHz, eight-core).

The Series X also features a Quick Resume feature that allows gamers to switch quickly between games even after the game has been rebooted for an update. There has, however, been no information regarding the software and what the PlayStation 5 will look like. Although Sony would likely share more details as the launch approaches.
