Microsoft’s new operating system, Windows 10X might not arrive until 2021. The software giant had announced earlier in 2020 that it is reworking the operating system for single-screen devices against its original for dual-screen devices.

According to ZDNet, single-screen devices running Windows 10X, designed for education and business use, should arrive in 2021. The report says that Microsoft will also launch the dual-screen hardware running Windows 10X in 2022.

The Windows 10X, codenamed ‘Lite’/’Santorini’, is not a new operating system. It’s a variant of Microsoft’s existing Windows 10 in a more modular form, with a new, simpler interface. Microsoft had planned to launch the 10X first on new dual-screen devices like the postponed Surface Neo.

The COVID-19 pandemic and its resulting lockdown regulations prevented the Windows 10X launch in 2020.

“The world is a very different place than it was last October when we shared our vision for a new category of dual-screen Windows devices,” Surface and Windows chief Panos Panay said in May 2020.

The company has also been reworking a lot of its products to better cater to PCs and laptops. Due to the pandemic, the company saw a spike in the use of its Microsoft Teams and Windows 10, necessitating some improvements.

Due to the delay, Microsoft is now working on bringing some Windows 10X UI and UX improvements to Windows 10. Already, Microsoft has updated its Start menu design, it also introduced a new Settings icon in Windows 10 that originally was for Windows 10X.
