Reports speculate that Microsoft is working on rivalling Google Chromebooks with Windows 11 Low-cost Surface Laptops. This news from Windows Central also says the Redmond based company will be releasing a stripped-down of Windows 11 called “Windows 11 SE.”
This version of Windows has the same functionality as Windows 10 S. Windows 11 SE should go head to head with Google’s Chrome OS. These new OS and low-cost Surface laptops will be targeting the education markets, the K-12 to be precise.
Microsoft’s Surface Go tablet with S Mode is Microsoft’s recent offering for the education market. The tablet is rivalling the likes of Apple’s iPad and to some extent Google’s Chromebook.
Windows Central claims that the upcoming Surface laptop will be known as the “Surface Laptop SE”. The code-named Tenjin laptop sports an 11.6-inch screen and Intel’s N412O Celeron processor and up to 8GB RAM.
In order to keep this a low-cost Surface laptop, Microsoft will be shipping the Surface Laptop SE with only a single USB-A and USB-C port according to the reports.

A recent job opening for System-on-a-chip (SOC) architect at Microsoft’s Surface points to a custom made processor for its devices. Just like Apple’s M1 chips, Microsoft might be interested in making its own processors.
The Job listing has a description of “the features and capabilities of SoC used on Surface devices.” This might just mean the Redmond based company is looking to design its own chips.
Apple might be releasing its newer M1X chip today, its first chip M1 is custom made with so many benefits than Intel’s. Interestingly, Apple can now make its Macbooks and iMacs run cooler and quieter due to its chip design.
The Windows 11 owners can certainly borrow the same ideology from Apple in designing their own chips. That way, it can ditch the Intel and AMD chips in its devices and run more efficiently.
Although a job listing doesn’t confirm that Microsoft is building its own Chips, it would be good for innovation if it actually does. We only speculate that an SoC silicon architect job listing is just the right step in that direction.
Surface devices have had a history of being pricey especially when buying extra accessories for more productivity. Microsoft will have to aggressively price these new devices to the latest Chromebook prices.
