Microsoft has announced an update in a blog post that will bring native support for the Apple M1 Macs to the Windows productivity suite or Microsoft Office. The apps getting the updates on Apple’s new custom chip architecture are Word; Excel; Outlook; PowerPoint, and OneNote.

“We are excited to announce that starting today we are releasing new versions of many of our Microsoft 365 for Mac apps that run natively on Macs with M1. This means that now our core flagship Office apps—Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote—will run faster and take full advantage of the performance improvements on new Macs, making you even more productive on the latest MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and Mac mini,” the blog post read.

Microsoft Teams won’t, however, receive the update. Microsoft says on their blog post that they’re working on giving the Teams App the update, but the company hasn’t announced when. Slack on the other hand is already testing native support for its app in a public beta.

The updates also make the apps universal. This means that the new Microsoft Office versions will run on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. Therefore, any upcoming updates or features happen at the same time for both platforms.

If you have automatic updates turned on, you should have the new Office update or you can update it via the Mac App Store or Microsoft’s AutoUpdate software. Updating it via Mac App Store or the AutoUpdate software depends on if you downloaded Office via the App Store or directly from Microsoft.

Outlook users will get not only native Apple Silicon support, they’ll also get support for iCloud accounts as well. This will allow them to sync their email, contacts, and calendars to the app if they use Apple’s service to store them.
