Microsoft fires 400 employees in Russia as it cut ties with the nation

Microsoft fires 400 employees in Russia as it sets the ball rolling to cut ties completely with the country over the Ukraine invasion.

The company had initially joined other tech firms in placing economic sanctions on Russia by putting a hold on new sales of products and services. However, the sanctions have not had the desired effect and it is now severing ties.

While it is not clear how many Microsoft employees are in Russia, 400 will be a significant number of them. At the beginning of 2022, the tech firm had said that Russian accounts make up only one per cent of its revenue; so, while the human effect may be huge, Microsoft could easily shrug off the financial effect.

In a statement, the company said that it is working closely with the impacted workers, to what end? Microsoft was not specific if it will pay severance packages or send freelance jobs their way. What it did say in its email was:

“As a result of the changes to the economic outlook and the impact on our business in Russia, we have made the decision to significantly scale down our operations in Russia.

“We will continue to fulfill our existing contractual obligations with Russian customers while the suspension of new sales remains in effect.

“We are working closely with impacted employees to ensure they are treated with respect and have our full support during this difficult time.”

With Microsoft joining the likes of Dell and Apple in stopping business in Russia, the list of multinational companies applying sanctions to the country continues to grow.
