Google’s Chromebooks are currently the best offering of laptops designed for classrooms, students and the general education sector. These laptops are lightweight, fast and offer productivity on the go with media consumption tools.

Chrome OS runs on the web, even Microsoft tried to compete previously with its S Mode Windows that didn’t work. This failed woefully as there were not enough apps and loads of restrictions.

Paige Johnson, head of Microsoft’s education marketing says that “Windows 11 SE also supports third-party apps, including Zoom and Chrome, because we want to give schools the choice to use what works best for them.”

Microsoft also says that Windows 11 SE won’t ship with the Microsoft Store. The company will be allowing IT admins for schools and educational institutions to have their own third-party apps installed.

This news confirms Windows Central earlier rumour of a stripped-down of Windows 11 called “Windows 11 SE.” The company even released a $259 Surface Laptop SE with Windows 11 SE.

This version of Windows share the same functionality with Windows 10 S. Windows 11 SE should go head to head with Google’s Chrome OS. These new OS will be targeting the education markets, the K-12 to be precise.

The Redmond based company has been collating research from teachers and the likes about how they use their laptops for education. Windows 11 SE tweaks some changes, apps now launch in fullscreen mode and the removal of the multiple Snap Layouts.

New Layout

Interestingly, the removal of the layout creates a minimal, cleaner single mode that allows side by side app placements. Also removed is the new Widgets sections peculiar to Windows 11, it was found distracting in classrooms.

A lot of Laptop manufacturers like HP, Dell, Acer, Asus and Lenovo amongst others will be making Windows 11 SE laptops soonest. Microsoft is also bundling apps like Teams, OneNote, Office in Windows 11 SE so IT Admins don’t have to install them again.

Users can in Windows 11 SE can back up documents to OneDrive with offline support. So it’s really easy to set up, students can open their Windows 11 SE laptops, Sign in, learn and upload their work to the cloud.
