Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its latest electric vehicle, the EQA crossover, as part of a new range of EVs that it will produce in the next few years. The SUV will have a range of less than 300 miles and a 66.5kWh battery pack.

The EQA is based on the automakers GLA-class of SUVs and is scheduled to go into production in Europe this year. Although they won’t be going into the US market soon, the EQA is still being considered for the US market, according to a spokesperson for Daimler, Mercedes-Benz’s parent company.

Mercedes is looking to push the EQB electric crossover to the American market. The vehicle is to be similar to the GLB-classM scheduled to go into production later this year. Meanwhile, the EQS and EQE models will be the first EVs built on Mercedes’ new modular electric vehicle platform.

For the EQA, Mercedes is relying on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) to give it an estimated range of 300 miles. The issue with this is that the NEDC standard is regarded as outdated. Also, The Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) which is more stringent is in the process of replacing it.

The EQA’s 66.5kWh battery pack is slightly above the average EV. Tesla’s 100kWh, available in the Model S and Model X, is one of the biggest batteries currently available.

Mercedes-Benz views the EQA as an entry point to its EV lineup. The automaker says it plans to release additional variants of the crossover. They include an all-wheel-drive version which will feature an additional electric powertrain that increases its power output to 200kW or more. It’s also offering another version with more than 310 miles based on the WLTP standard. Mercedes puts the net price for the EQA at $48,442.
