While there’s yet to be plot details from the new film, Disney has contacted writer Christina Hodson to write a “wholly original story with new characters under the Pirates moniker“. It will be produced by longtime Pirates filmmaker, Jerry Bruckheimer.

This is a separate production from the Pirates of The Caribbean reboot that was announced to be in the works last year.

Pirates of the Caribbean is one of the most commercially successful franchises of all time. It has so far grossed over $4.5bn (£3.6bn) across five feature films.

However, THR reports the studio is seeking fresh ways to reinvent the franchise. The new move came after the fifth production, Dead Men Tell No Tales suffered a low performance compared to its predecessors.

Robbie’s most recent projects include 2019 film Bombshell and Quentin Tarantino’s movie Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, which she starred in alongside her former co-star from Wolf of Wall Street  Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt. Margot Robbie will appear next in James Gunn’s Suicide Squad, reprising her “Harley Quinn” role.

Christina Hodson takes credit for writing some of Hollywood’s blockbusters which include Transformers spin-off Bumblebee, DC’s The Flash, and Batgirl.
