Over 79 million personal computers were shipped by manufacturers in the third quarter of 2020. This represents an increase of 13 per cent year-over-year according to analytic firm Canalys.

Lenovo is leading the pack, shipping the most units in the third quarter of 2020 at 19.3 million. This represents an increase of 11 per cent from 2020. HP shipped 18.6 million laptops, an increment of 12 per cent year-over-year. Dell shipped 11.9 million units during the third quarter of 2020, a decrease of 0.5 per cent from 2020.

Apple shipped 6.3 million units, an increase of 13.2 per cent from the previous year and Acer shipped 5.6 million units last quarter representing a 15 per cent increase from 2019, the biggest percentage increase.

Earlier in 2020, there was a scarcity of available laptops due to demand from people working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic. PC shipments couldn’t keep up and declined by 12.3 per cent during the first quarter of 2020. However, according to Canalys analyst, Ishan Dutt, vendors are starting to recover.

“Vendors, the supply chain, and the channel have now had time to find their feet and allocate resources towards supplying notebooks, which continue to see massive demand from both businesses and consumers,” Dutt said.

Dutt also believes that the resurgence will also help the country recover from the economic effects of the pandemic. Spending on IT, including investment in PCs, will “be a core driver of economic recoveries in the aftermath of the pandemic,” he said.
