Should there be a natural disaster, Lyft says it wants to use its ridesharing service to provide relief to people. This is so far as the road network is not affected in such cases.

Natural disasters are most times inevitable, and transportation becomes difficult during those times. So Lyft has decided that its central goal of their Disaster Relief Access Program is “to make transportation as easy as possible for those in need.”

The company’s disaster relief effort will include transporting people to shelters and other areas of refuge, to align with their City works program. In light of this, during natural disasters, there will be free trips which people can request for using “ride codes”. They will share the codes by nonprofits, local news organisations, and also on Lyft’s Facebook and Instagram pages.

In addition to this, Lyft said its updates and ride codes will also be posted on Facebook’s Crisis Response Hub.

The company added that it aims “to keep rides affordable during times of disaster to ensure people get to where they need to be.” This is especially in cases where there are no free rides.

If possible, when called upon, it will also give rides to first responders and volunteers dealing directly with the disaster.

Lyft to help in a natural disaster

Lyft notes that it can’t place any of its drivers or those in need of help in danger during the ride. The company plans to work closely with the local officials to see how well it can assist.

However, if experts predict the natural disaster ahead of time, Lyft says it plans to help out with things like evacuation ahead of time.

Moreover, it will also use its social channels to direct people in disaster zones to other useful services. This includes Airbnb’s Open Homes program and Facebook’s aforementioned Crisis Response Hub.

Both of these services are popular for providing relief during disastrous events. Lyfts feels that many people will appreciate their effort as they step-up to join others.
