“I have managed Miss Tyson’s career for over 40 years, and each year was a privilege and blessing,” her manager, Larry Thompson, said in a statement Thursday. “Cicely thought of her new memoir as a Christmas tree decorated with all the ornaments of her personal and professional life. Today she placed the last ornament, a Star, on top of the tree.”

Tyson broke into movies with the 1959 Harry Belafonte film “Odds Against Tomorrow,” followed by “The Comedians,” “The Last Angry Man,” “A Man Called Adam” and “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter.” She took a break and returned in 1972 for drama Sounder, for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman also earned her two Emmy awards, as well as Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All. In 2018, she became the first Black woman to receive an honorary Oscar. Two years later, she was selected for the Peabody Career Achievement Award for her work on the stage, in film, and on television.

Her Memoir, published on Tuesday, 26th.

Since news of her death, thousands have paid tribute to the late Hollywood icon. Tyler Perry on Instagram said the news “brought me to my knees”, describing that Oprah Winfrey broke the news to him.

“I was sitting at the table working when I got this overwhelming feeling to watch ‘Miss Jane Pittman.’ I hadn’t seen the movie in years. I didn’t even understand the feeling to turn it on, but I did anyway,” he wrote in a touching Instagram tribute. “Not 12 minutes into the movie my phone rang. It was Oprah calling to tell me that Cicely had died.”

Viola Davis, who had worked very closely with Tyson shared she was devasted by news of her death.

“I’m devastated. My heart is just broken. I loved you so much!! You were everything to me!” Davis wrote alongside a photo from the HTGAWM set. “You made me feel loved and seen and valued in a world where there is still a cloak of invisibility for us dark chocolate girls. You gave me permission to dream….because it was only in my dreams that I could see the possibilities in myself.”

Davis added that she’s “not ready” for Tyson to be her angel. “But…I also understand that it’s only when the last person who has a memory of you dies, that you’ll truly be dead,” she noted. “In that case, you will be immortal. Thank you for shifting my life. Thank you for the long talks, thank you for loving me. Rest well 💔💔💔”
