Kids Around The World Can Learn To Read From Home With Google’s Read Along App

Google’s latest effort to encourage people to stay at home is the Read Along app that teaches children from the age of five and above to read. Learn about the various ways this app can improve children’s English reading skills.

Initially, Google had released it as Bolo in India around September 2019. In nearly five months, it had impacted over 800,000 children’s reading skills. However, with many school-aged children stuck at home due to the pandemic, Google has now made the app available for everyone in 180 countries.

If the Read Along app is not available in your location, it will redirect you to the Bolo App. It has been updated to feature all the functions that Google added to its new app.

According to Google’s blog post, the app is available in nine languages including English, Spanish, Portuguese and Hindi.

Read Along is especially helpful for parents who have to work from home. It has an assistant named Diya, who acts as an instructor for children. Thus, as they read out loud, it can detect if a student is struggling or successfully reading the passage. The assistant gives them positive and encouraging feedback as they read.

Diya uses Google’s text-to-speech and speech recognition technology to perform these duties. Children can also tap Diya for help when they come across a difficult word or sentence. The app brings interesting stories and games to keep children engaged and entertained.

In addition, parents can use one app for different children. All they need to do is create different profiles for different readers. Then, when a particular child wants to read, they tap the appropriate picture. This will allow the app to set the right difficulty level for the child.

To manage security and privacy, Google’s Read Along app does not have in-app purchases and ads. Also, it works offline after the initial download and the only time a parent will need to reconnect to the internet is to download additional stories from time to time.
