Call of Duty makers in court over harassment-related suicide

The family of Kerri Moynihan, a finance manager at Activision Blizzard, are suing the Call of Duty makers over her death in 2017 in a case relating to harassment.

Kerri Moynihan had been found dead at a company retreat in 2017 in what appeared to be suicide. However, her family is suing her employers and accusing them of contributing to her death.

According to the lawsuit, the company had not cooperated with investigators after Kerri’s demise. For example, after her supervisor at the time denied having a relationship with her, it failed to provide the police with her official laptop and cellphone, claiming to have wiped it.

Although she passed in 2017, it was not until July 2021 that the Department of Fair Employment and Housing, California, filed a case against Activision. The lawsuit did not mention Moynihan but referenced her alleged harassment and accused the company of gender discrimination.

Following investigations (both by the US Securities and Exchange Commission and US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission), CNET says that the company was fined $18 million and forced to fire over 20 employees.

The media also pressed the company’s CEO, Bobby Kotick, for doing nothing about the years of harassment going on at Activision and even encouraging ‘frat boy’ culture. Kotick always maintained his innocence.

The game maker was in so much trouble and had to sell to Microsoft in January 2022 for $68.7 billion. Activision Blizzard then came to be under Xbox, and the head of Microsoft’s gaming department, Phil Spencer, promised to change the practices at the company.

On Friday, 4 March 2022, the company addressed the lawsuit in an email statement. Activision Blizzard assured the public that it was also looking into the matter while commemorating with the family of Kerri Moynihan.
