Embattled Hollywood star Johnny Depp has annouced he’s been asked to resign from his role as Grindelwald by Warner Bros. In an Instagram post, Depp wrote.Johnny Depp

“I wish to let you know that I have been asked to resign by Warner Bros from my role as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts and I have respected and agreed to that request,” Depp wrote.

“Johnny Depp will depart the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ franchise. We thank Johnny for his work on the films to date,” a Warner Bros. spokesperson said. “‘Fantastic Beasts 3’ is currently in production, and the role of Gellert Grindelwald will be recast. The film will debut in theaters worldwide in the summer of 2022.”

The series, written by J K Rowling follows the adventure of a bespectacled Wizard. Johnny Depp appeared briefly on the first of the series “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” in 2016.

The actor returned to take on a more prominent role in the sequel “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.” released in 2018.

While the first did fairly well at the box office grossing over $800 million worldwide, the franchise suffered a sharp decline with the release of the sequel. It grossed only $654 million worldwide, the lowest ticket sales for a Harry Potter film ever.

Depp’s appearance on the franchise was wrought with controversy. This was owing to his highly publicised case of abuse and divorce with his ex-wife and actress Amber Heard.

His exit from Warner Bros is coming only a few days after he lost his profile Libel case against the Sun.
Depp while announcing the news of exit continued to insist on his innocence. He also promised to continue the fight in the courts until he proves it.

The surreal judgment of the court in the UK will not change my fight, to tell the truth and I confirm that I plan to appeal,” he wrote. “My resolve remains strong and I intend to prove that the allegations against me are false. My life and career will not be defined by this moment in time.”
