Jeff Wee’s WormingUp: Using Worms To Improve Waste Management

Innovator, Jeff Wee has discovered a faster way to decompose waste that does not cost as much as other environmental depleting methods. Besides recycling (which may not always be compatible with all waste) other methods of managing waste endanger our environment. Much research has gone into finding ways to make this process both eco-friendly and cost-effective.

Jeff Wee, Founder of WormingUp

The founder of WormingUp has found out how to do this. This is why we are interested in the firm.

Jeff is an alumnus of Shell’s development initiative known as the LiveWIRE. The Malaysian based entrepreneur had seen the problem of poor waste disposal and figured out how to solve it. His solution is simple: let the worms have it!

But not just any type of worm, but that which grows into the black soldier fly. These larvae are able to grow as big as an inch but their size is not their most impressive feature. They can consume organic waste at a rate of about 30 times that of natural composting. For now, the company is concentrating its activity in Malaysia.

Wee said in an interview:

“Basically, WormingUp is a social enterprise that aims to close the loop on food waste. We use black soldier fly larvae to digest organic waste. Any leftover waste becomes organic fertilizer.”

He got a $20,000 funding from the LiveWIRE competition hosted by Shell in 2018. Jeff Wee emerged as the winner of the Top Ten Innovators Competition” contest in the Retail Supply Chain category. WormingUp partners with Shell retail station in Kuching, Maylasia, running a recycling programme. As of when this report was compiled, the operation has processed more than four tones of waste.
