Amazon CEO, Jeff Bezos has posted his support for the Black Lives Matter movement publicly. The post was a reply to a customer email who criticised his company because of its response to the death of George Floyd and ensuing protests around the US against racism and police brutality.

“Black lives matter’ doesn’t mean other lives don’t matter. Black lives matter speaks to racism and the disproportionate risk that Black people face in our law enforcement and justice system,” Bezos said in the reply. The CEO had also posted the rely on Instagram.

Amazon in response to the recent racial injustice had put a huge “Black Lives Matter” banner at the top of the website. The banner also contains a link to a blog post detailing the actions Amazon is taking in support of the movement.

The company will also donate $10 million to organisations fighting racial injustice and supporting equity. These organisations are ACLU Foundation, Black Lives Matter, Brennan Center for Justice, Equal Justice Initiative, Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, NAACP, National Bar Association, National Museum of African American History and Culture, National Urban League, Thurgood Marshall College Fund, UNCF (United Negro College Fund), and Year Up.

Amazon in the post says: “We believe Black lives matter. We stand in solidarity with our Black employees, customers, and partners, and are committed to helping build a country and a world where everyone can live with dignity and free from fear”.

Bezos is not the only Silicon Valley CEO saying, Black Lives Matter. Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg also used the “Black Lives Matter” phrase in an email to employees which he posted publicly. “To members of our Black community: I stand with you. Your lives matter. Black lives matter,” he said.

Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian too left the board of his company with the same message. The co-founder had also asked that his replacement be a black candidate. Ohanian further criticised the company’s approach to controversial Reddit communities.
