Intel To Build The Planet’s Largest Silicon Manufacturing Site In Ohio

Chipmaker Intel plans to build the planet’s largest silicon manufacturing site in Ohio, United States. The company made the announcement today January 21 2022, with plans to spend at least $20 billion to erect this site.

The company plans to build this site in New Albany, near Columbus, Ohio. This would be a  massive 1,000-acre land that would contain two chip factories that employ a minimum of 3,000 workers. Intel also says construction will begin this year, with operational activity in 2025.

This is assuring news amidst a global chip shortage, chip makers have not been able to produce enough chips. Sadly, the low production of chips has affected the production of automobiles and electronics.

In an interview with Time, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger says this site will be “the largest silicon manufacturing location on the planet.” It would also be known as the “Silicon Heartland.” Intel has other factories across the United States in New Mexico, Oregon, and Arizona.

After the Ohio site is completed in 2025; Intel plans to invest up to $100 billion in it over the next decade. Intel already has a $100 million partnership deal in the works with Ohio universities and the US National Foundation to source new talent.

Intel’s newest site won’t be displacing homes or removing other existing structures. It currently faces competition from another chip maker Samsung. Samsung will be building a new mega $17 billion chip factory in Texas. The South Korean company aims to boost its chip-making market share with this new factory. Samsung says Taylor factory construction will begin this year and chip production will begin by 2024.
