Instagram now supports buying items via DMs with new payments feature

On Monday, Mark Zuckerberg announced a new payments feature in Instagram chat that lets users buy items directly from DMs. The feature is targeted at helping small business owners make more sales conversions.

In a post announcing the feature, Zuckerberg said:

According to the announcement, it is only available in the US for now. Business owners can create a payment request for a customer that signifies interest in making a purchase, and they can pay via the button.

As the screenshot shows, the payments are processed by PayPal, so you will need to set up a PayPal account to use it. This feature is timely as Meta is trying to ramp up other product support across its platforms. With the company focused on monetising all of its apps, processing transactions is an excellent way to start.

With payment directly available in-between conversations about a product, prospective customers are less likely to be distracted before making a purchase. Also, the company had just changed Facebook Pay to Meta Pay in June, and it only makes sense that the payment is supported across its portfolio.

Small business owners who have not seen the need to create a storefront via Instagram or Facebook Shops can accept payments with this new feature.
