In The Coming Plague Inc Game, You Save The World Instead Of Destroying It
In an unexpected turn of event, Plague Inc is creating a new version of its game that mandates players to try to save the world instead of destroying it as the current version does.
Before now, Plague Inc is a game where players, playing as a novel pathogen, try to destroy the world by infecting everyone. The game has gained unprecedented popularity with the breakout of COVID-19.
While seeing new players in the wake of a virus outbreak is not new, the game creators concede that this time around, the increase is on a whole new level. It has outranked the outbreak of Ebola and various recent flu by more than a mile.
In the beginning, people were content with playing the game as it was.
While Michelle Carras Colder, a mental health researcher, had explained that it likely helped players through their anxiety and/or give them a better perspective, it seems like a reflex. It is likely the same reason why many are watching post-apocalyptic films recently.

However, people have been requesting for a new version that totally changes the goal of the game. Ndemic Creators -the company that created Plague Inc- announced that it is working on the new version as requested by customers.
Although the company did not mention a release date, it will likely be soon. In this new version, players would be something of ‘the good guys’. Business Insider explains that they would do things like boost healthcare systems and impose quarantines.
They would also likely control world governments. Thus, they can shut down public services to prevent further spread of the infection. This new version will likely encourage more people to obey government policies.
The creators also mention that this new version will be free as the current version costs around N1,400 ($4).
The turn in the scenario is truly shocking. No one expected the world to get to this stage. In James Vaughan, creator of Plague Inc, words:
“Eight years ago, I never imagined the real world would come to resemble a game of Plague Inc. or that so many players would be using Plague Inc. to help them get through an actual pandemic.”
You can get the current version on the Google Play Store.
