Important Facts About Hacktivists, Anonymous, As They Allegedly Return Amidst Protest For Late George Floyd

Anonymous is a group of international hackers who use high-end computer skills and gadgets to attack institutions as a means of civil disobedience. They are popular because their targets are usually high-ranking and popular institutions; they have attacked several governments, government institutions, agencies, large corporations.

The group’s existence is famously traced down to 2003. Their Wikipedia page claims that they started out as an imageboard forum named 4chan. Typically, it was an internet community for members to share ideas in the form of images. Anonymous is also particularly intricate and elusive because they have no constituted authority; making them very difficult to stop.

Anons is the name that Anonymous members go by. When they appear on screens, they use Guy Fawkes masks, as shown above, to conceal their identity. Many members also go as far as using technology to alter the sound of their voices when they make public addresses.

Anonymous became popular for hacktivism after they attacked the Church of Scientology in 2008; under a mission termed Project Chanology. However, after this initial start, they have expanded the scope of their attacks.

The group has employed Rootkit, backdoor, Trojan horse, virus, worm, spyware, ransomware, logic bomb, botnet, keystroke logging, HIDS, web shell, and many more. While security agencies in the US, the UK, Australia, Spain, India, Turkey, and the Netherlands have arrested some members; the group is still active.

In the early hours of Sunday, 31st May 2020, Anonymous allegedly returned. A video credited to the group accused the police of being oppressive tools in the hands of the rich. It ends the video by saying the officers who had hands in George Floyd’s death must face murder charges. See the full video below:

This is not the first time Anonymous is backing protests against racially motivated police killing. The group had attacked the Missouri police department in 2014 after the police shot and killed African-American Michael Brown. It took down their servers and phone lines in a series of attacks. Anonymous also exposed a list of 57 phone numbers and 23 email addresses that allegedly belong to Ku Klux Klan (KKK) members in 2015.
