Huawei is celebrating 20 years of doing business in the UK and it is doing so with a charm offensive in the British Media. The company is facing a security review that could see it blocked from providing 5G kits to the government.
The Chinese telecoms company says it is “as committed as ever” to provide “the best equipment” to the UK’s 5G mobile and full-fibre broadband providers in an open letter. Huawei’s UK chief also says he expects the government to act in the interests of its citizens.
Victor Zhang, vice president of Huawei and head of its UK operations, told the BBC that the media campaign was about providing people with “the facts” amid all the “noise” surrounding the company.

He also warned of the impending economic impact if the 5G connectivity is delayed by Huawei’s exclusion. He claims the losses could run tens of billions of Pounds of lost productivity benefits.
“We need to work closely to address the issue, but we need to take action to accelerate the broadband deployment. We don’t have time to delay this,” he said.
In January 2020, the UK government announced that it will cap Huawei’s market share at 35%. The decision also meant that the company would be excluded from sensitive locations in the country’s telecom infrastructure.
Huawei has been at the center of the trade war between the US and China. The US had banned the tech company and urged its allies to follow suit as it claims that China is using the telecom provider to commit acts of espionage.
It will be interesting to see on which side of the fence the UK will end up on.
