The chances that you want to change your default browser once you have tried other browsers is very high. Mac laptops come preloaded with the Safari as the default browser. This means that the Safari browser will open automatically when a user clicks on links.

Sometimes, users will prefer to use the Safari browser to optimise compatibility with certain websites. For instance, even though the Safari works well for most sites, it may be better to use Chrome to open Google apps. Some other websites also have issues working with Safari.

These two ways can help you to change your default web browser on the Mac.

1. Change through system preference

To change your default browser in your Apple Mac’s general preferences:

  • First, click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the browser.
  • Then scroll down to select System Preferences.
  • Now click on General in the left corner.
  • Hit Default Web Browser to open a menu.
  • Finally, click on any other web browser you’ve downloaded and wish to set as your default browser.

2. Change through new browser settings

Most of the time when trying to change the default browser from the new browser, the methods differ depending on the browser. However, if you intend to use Google Chrome as default, this could guide you.

  • First, Open the Chrome browser.
  • Now, click on Chrome in the Menu Bar.
  • Then scroll down and select Preferences.
  • Go down to Default Browser and click on Make Default Browser.
  • At this point, a window will pop up asking if you want to Keep ‘Safari’ as your default or Use ‘Chrome.’
  • Now Choose Use Chrome.

In case it is a different browser apart from Chrome as default, there probably won’t be much of a difference. Just follow the instructions above.
