Things have taken a dramatic turn for Nigeria as doctors and other health workers announce a nationwide indefinite strike.

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Abuja chapter announced the decision to embark on strike. It came just a few hours after health authorities declared the third case of coronavirus case in the country.

The new case is a 30 year old Nigerian woman who flew into the country from the UK. She is reported to have self-quarantined upon arrival. Afterwards, she submitted herself to the authorities in charge after developing symptoms.

The striking doctor stated poor working conditions in the country has made them take this otherwise harsh decision.

Speaking in a statement, the ARD President, Roland Aigbovo stated that the government’s refusal to pay their basic salaries for over two months had forced them commence on this mass action.

He said there has been salary irregularities and shortfalls since the migration to the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System by the FCTA.

Dr Aigbovo said their members have been thrown into severe financial distress due to the non-payment of their salaries. He also mentioned that all their warnings and ultimatums have fallen on deaf ears.
