WhatsApp is finally getting dark mode as it confirmed this much-awaited feature via a blog post.

“Dark mode for WhatsApp offers a fresh look on a familiar experience. It’s designed to reduce eye strain in low light environments. And we hope it helps prevent those awkward moments where your phone lights up the room,” the blog post read.

Users who use iOS 13 or Android 10 already have dark mode enabled on the device level as WhatsApp automatically switches it over. However, users who have Android 9 simply have to update their WhatsApp to enable the new dark theme via the WhatsApp settings menu.

Facebook designed the dark mode in a way that makes it lowers the brightness of a phone display.

During testing we found that combining pure black and white creates high contrast that can lead to eye fatigue. So instead, you’ll notice a special dark gray background and off-white color that lowers the brightness of the screen, cuts down the glare and improves contrast and readability,” a WhatsApp spokesperson explains.

The launch video (below) of the long-awaited feature, features lots of people squinting into their phones. The short video features a cover of Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence,” which contains the “Hello Darkness” lyric.

How to enable Whatsapp dark mode

You can use the dark mode on Android 10 and iOS 13, by enabling it in system settings.

Users on Android 9 should have to first update their WhatsApp, tap More Options > Settings > Chats > Theme.

From the Theme option, you can select from the options below:

  1. Dark: To turn the dark mode on.
  2. Light: To put off the dark mode.
  3. System default: This will enable the WhatsApp dark mode to match the devices’ settings.

The dark theme will be mostly pure black on WhatApp for iOS devices and a darker gray on Whatsapp for Android.
