Hackers Stole About $30 Million In Funds From Crypto.com Accounts

Hackers have stolen about $30 million from Cryptocurrency exchange company Crypto.com. This hack affects about 400 customers; says CEO Kris Marszalek during his interview with Bloomberg.

Crypto.com recent blog post now says the company lost over $30 billion in Bitcoin and Ethereum during the hack. The details of the hack include withdrawals of 4,836.26 ETH and 443.93 BTC which roughly is  $15.2 million and $18.6 million respectively. Also, $66,200 worth of other currencies was stolen away from 483 Crypto.com users.

He previously didn’t disclose that funds were stolen from customers accounts, in his tweet some moments before the interview. He was criticized for making vague statements about the exact losses of the hack, omitting the funds.

Official statements from the company say that the hack is merely a security “incident” and “suspicious activity on their accounts.” Marszalek specifically say that “no customers funds were lost” during the hack.

This was until the security company PeckShield said that hackers made away with $15 million worth of Ethereum. These funds were sent to Tornado Cash to be “washed.” Interestingly, this is a crypto privacy company that can hide the final destination of Ethereum sent to it; an actual legitimate service.

Known as the “mixer” this privacy feature shows how Cryptocurrency is enabling a system of theft, money laundering and other financial crimes. The company says all affected accounts have been fully reimbursed. It has effected a new 2FA authentication, improving its firewall as it assures users of safer transactions.
