Grammys Considering A New Category For “Afrobeats”

Following the CEO of the Grammys Academy, Mr. Harvey Manson, revealing that the Academy is thinking about adding an Afrobeats category to its coveted award, there have been a variety of responses.

Grammys Considering A New Category For "Afrobeats"

Harvey Manson, the academy’s chief executive officer, disclosed that the academy has begun the arduous process of adding an Afrobeats category to the Grammys while addressing to the media at the Global Citizens performance in Ghana.

Harvey claims that the academy met with Afrobeats creatives, which includes musicians, producers, composers, and executives,

to discuss the genre and its various subgenres.

He also disclosed that before discussions can begin, academy members must submit a proposal for the creation of a new category. The first stage, though, is the listening session with the Afrobeats pioneers.

What this implies is that songs that fall under the Afrobeats subgenre will be eligible for nomination

now that the Grammys are consideing an Afrobeats category.

The term “Afrobeats,” which generally refers to popular music from Ghana and Nigeria, has frequently been confused in the West with any sound emanating from sub-Saharan Africa.

It is also implied that South African music styles including House, Amapiano, and Kwaito may be categorized as Afrobeats.

Afrobeats might also be used to describe Congolese music like the Soukous or the East African Singile.

It will be up to the Academy to correctly define the key components that distinguish an Afrobeats song

because doing so will be the first step in genuinely honoring the appropriate music, regardless of where they were produced.
