Grammy-Nominated US Rapper Nipsey Hussle Shot Dead, Celebrities Mourn

Grammy-nominated rapper Nipsey Hussle was shot dead in the US city of Los Angeles on Sunday, 31st March 2019. The shooting happened outside his clothing store, moments after meeting fans.

“Having strong enemies is a blessing.”

Eyewitnesses saw a man fleeing in a vehicle after the shooting. The Los Angeles Police Department said they are still searching for the suspect who they only described as a black male. Videos have since surfaced of Nipsey receiving CPR on the scene outside his clothing store.

Hussle’s hustle

An underground rapper, Hussle struggled to find fame. He began selling his own mixtapes, which hip-hop royalty Jay-Z once bought 100 of for $100 each. Nominated for Best Rap Album for “Victory Lap,” his first formal album finally dropped in February 2018 after six years of teasing but lost out to rap’s woman of the moment Cardi B.

Nipsey grew up in south Los Angeles and often talked about being in a street gang during his teenage years. He had alleged ties to the Rollin 60s Neighborhood Crips gang. He told the LA Times in a 2018 interview,

“We dealt with death, with murder. It was like living in a war zone, where people die on these blocks and everybody is a little bit immune to it.”

He had since become a community organiser in South LA. Involved in the Destination Crenshaw arts project, he opened a co-working space called Vector 90 in Crenshaw so young people could take classes in science, technology and math.

Before the shooting, the rapper was reportedly due to meet LA Police Commissioner Steve Soboroff and LAPD Chief Michel Moore to discuss gang violence. Soroboff wrote:

“We (@LAPDChiefMoore and I ) were meeting, at the request of @NipseyHussle with him and @rocnation tomorrow at 4 pm to talk about ways he could help stop gang violence and help us help kids. I’m so very sad.”

The heavily-tattooed hip-hop star was next to perform at the Kings of the West concert on September 14 at the SAP Center in San Jose.

Surviving Nipsey Hussle are his two-year-old son Kross and his daughter Emani from a prior relationship. The rapper and his 34-year-old girlfriend of five years had just quizzed each other about favourite colours and celebrity crushes in a GQ interview on Thursday.
