Google has confirmed that its employees will now return to the office in September 2020. It also says it will be experimenting with a hybrid model that allows some employees to work remotely on some days of the week.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai emailed employees about plans to test a flexible workweek once conditions are safe for people to return according to The New York Times. Google employees would work three days from the office and the rest of the week from home under the new plan.

Pichai says the company is testing if the model would lead to greater productivity and employee well-being. “No company at our scale has ever created a fully hybrid work force model — though a few are starting to test it — so it will be interesting to try,” Pichai wrote in the mail.

Google’s hybrid work model would require employees to live within commuting distance to their offices, according to CNBC, as a fully-remote option wasn’t offered.

Also, some employees may not be eligible for a flexible workweek. Employees in this category would most likely be those who need access to specialized equipment.

Google had fully asked its employees to work remotely in March 2020 as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. It was one of the earliest tech companies to adopt the policy to support social distancing.

The company had previously said it would keep its 200,000 full-time and contract employees working remotely until July 2021; but now it is pushing back the date.
