Google Removes Zynn From Play Store After Reports Of Cloning TikTok’s Content

Zynn, which recently witnessed a massive surge in number of downloads on both Google Play Store and Apple Store, has been removed from Play Store.

According to reports, high-profile TikTokers (TikTok users) have criticised Zynn recently; claiming to find their content on the platform without them uploading it there and without their consent.

In addition to this, some also said that they found their profiles on Zynn, when they never opened an account on the platform. These profiles had their TikTok names, pictures and contents (which were several months old).

A spokesperson for Zynn acknowledged that one of the company’s video was “plagiarised”, further saying: “We admit we have had some lapses in this area”. But the company also tried exonerating itself by saying it does not have the technology, yet, to check for plagiarised videos.

By the end of May 2020, we reported that Zynn was already the most downloaded free app on Apple store despite launching not less than a few days before 31st March. On Google Play Store, Zynn also had over 100,000+ downloads; for an app launched on 28th May 2020, this is impressive.

However, its popularity is likely tied to the fact that it offers users rewards for using it. Zynn also has a referral scheme that claims to be able to pay users as high as $110 for referring five people to use the app.

Why is Zynn targeting TikTok? The answer is that they are rivals and Zynn aims to steal TikTok’s market and its fame.

Kuaishou had bought Zynn from its original developers in December 2019 and is using it as its tool for making its statement in international markets. Note that Kuaishou is a Chinese video platform that rivals ByteDance’s Douyin (TikTok’s parent company) in China.

Thus, it is not strange that Zynn is targeting TikTok. However, its removal from Google Play Store will affect it greatly. Also, the app has a poor rating on the Android app store, averaging 1.7 stars out of a possible 5.

For now, it is still available on Apple Store and Zynn says it added a new page for users to report videos, likely, this might make Google consider reinstating the app on Play Store.
