Google is now pushing out version 8.1 of its Google Camera app to Pixel phones. This is good news to owners of older Pixel devices as they will now be able to gain some of the functionality from the new Pixel 5.

Version 8.0 of the camera app was previously just exclusive to the Pixel 5. However, version 8.1 now works on phones as old as Pixel 2 and 2 XL according to 9to5Google. There was a way to sideload version 8.0 on older phones though, but it requires a factory reset on the device, a suggestion many Pixel owners didn’t enjoy.

Version 8.0 and 8.1 of the camera app reorganises Google Camera’s features from along the bottom bar and adds features like Audio Zoom cinematic pan and quick, one-tap zoom adjustments.

The Verge however reports that the cinematic pan seems to only be arriving on the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, and won’t be available on any of the earlier Pixels. The new Cinematic Pan video recording feature from the Pixel 5 helps to smoothen panning shots.

Twitter user, Kelvin Peralta confirmed that the update is appearing for owners of the Pixel 4 XL.

The 8.1 update is still in the process of rolling out, therefore, it might take a while before it rolls out to all Pixel devices.
