Google is set to start paying for some paywalled content for its News Showcase program. The feature is part of its $1 billion investment in partnerships with news publishers, News Showcase.

News Showcase is a new Google News feature that launched in October 2020. The feature will display story panels curated by publishers.

News Showcase will “start offering people access to paywalled content in partnership with select news publishers,” a Google blog post said.

Google says the feature is available in several countries, but it is not in the US yet. The feature became available in October 2020 in Brazil and Germany. The service has also been instituted in Argentina, Canada, France, UK, and Australia since then. Google says, “Conversations are underway in a number of other countries”.

Google will pay partner publishers for limited access to paywalled content. To access paywalled content, users still need to register with individual publishers.

Google is also introducing a new kind of story panel, that will enable individual publishers to display curated lists of important articles of each day. You can find the selections in the ‘For You’ feeds. It is also available in a new dedicated area within the Newsstand on the service.

News Showcase first launched for the Google News app on Android, however, it is now available on iOS. The feature will also be coming to news.google.com and Google Discover soon.
