Google CEO, Sundar Pichai revealed during a recent earnings call that Google Meet is now adding about 3 million new subscribers per day. The teleconferencing service is enjoying increasing popularity because of the rising reliance on online solutions for meetings due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Google Meet had recorded 2 million daily users at the start of April 2020 for context. Pichai also reports that Meet has close to 100 million active daily participants. This translates to about a 300 percent growth in usage since January 2020.

“Last week, we surpassed a significant milestone. We are now adding roughly 3 million new users each day and have seen a thirty-fold increase in usage since January. There are now over 100 million daily Meet meeting participants,” said Pichai on the earnings call.

Google allowed free access to the premium features of Meet in March 2020 and also said it would be extending free access to the features till 30th September 2020 to encourage organisations to use the service.

This likely encouraged the 3 million subscribers that are joining Google Meet every day.

Google is also adding new features to Meet so as to better compete with rivals services like Zoom and Microsoft Teams. This includes a gallery view like Zoom and background noise cancelation like Microsoft Teams.

Google’s parent company, Alphabet also reported a $6.8 billion profit. Its revenue for the first fiscal quarter of 2020 is also recorded as $41.2 billion.

Meanwhile, Google’s cloud computing division, which G Suite is a part of, earned $2.8 billion in revenue. This is a 55 percent increase from the first quarter of 2019
