Google Meet Adds Custom Backgrounds To Its Platform

Google has announced that it is introducing custom backgrounds to its Meet video conferencing platform. However, mobile users will have to wait as Google says that the feature is “coming soon” to users on that platform.

The feature is available to users on the Chrome browser in Chrome OS as well as on Windows, Mac laptops and desktops. Users will be able to add a background image from their own photo library or from the preset images provided by Google which include landscapes, abstract art, and offices.

Although the company has rolled out custom backgrounds, it may take up to a week for all Google Meet users to access the new custom background option.

Google Meet is just joining rival videoconferencing services like Microsoft Teams and Zoom who already allow the use of custom images for meeting backgrounds.

Due to an increasing reliance on videoconferencing, the companies have been improving a lot on their offerings, giving users more options. Meet itself recently added a blur effect for meeting backgrounds, real-time captioning, low-light mode, hand-raising, and a tile view that can display up to 49 people.

In May 2020, Google bundled Meet into Gmail, providing a sidebar link and allowing meetings of up to 100 people with no time limits for users with a Google account. The service has also experienced growth with Google CEO Sundar Pichai saying in an earnings report that Meet had 235 million daily meetings and more than 7.5 billion daily video calls.
