Gmail for iPad is packing a new feature that supports split-view multitasking. This means users do not need to open a full Gmail screen to check or send new emails. The company says the feature is now available to all users.

The implication is that users can use the app in Split View, alongside Google Calendar or other iOS apps. That could potentially allow users to easily choose a photo or file to attach to a message.

Announcing the multitasking with Gmail feature, Google said; “When using an iPad, you’re now able to multitask with Gmail and other iOS applications. You can use Gmail and Google Calendar at the same time with Split View to check your schedule before replying to an email to confirm a meeting time. Or, you can easily drag and drop pictures from Google Photos into an email without leaving Gmail”

To use the Split View feature from Gmail, you’ll need to:

— turn on multitasking on your iPad

— swipe up from the bottom of your screen

— then drag the app you want to run alongside Gmail to the left or right edge of your screen

Google also recommends that users use keyboard shortcuts for “even more efficiency as you multitask”. The feature is available for both G Suite customers and free Google Accounts. Multitasking is also long overdue as Apple had introduced Split View in 2015 with the iOS 9.
