Google has announced an extension to allowing free Google Meet users host calls for more than 60 minutes. The policy was set to expire after 30th September 2020, and the extension will now last through March 2021.

As we look ahead to a holiday season with less travel and important milestones like family reunions, PTA meetings and weddings hosted over video, we want to continue helping those who rely on Meet to stay in touch over the coming months. As a sign of our commitment, today we’re continuing unlimited Meet calls (up to 24 hours) in the free version through March 31, 2021 for Gmail accounts,” Google Meet’s group product manager, Samir Pradhan, said in a blog post.

G Suite and G Suite for Education customers are to lose free access to some advanced Google Meet features on 30th September 2020.

Features like hosting meetings with up to 250 participants and the ability to save meeting recordings to Google Drive will also expire on 30th September. According to Google, these free features will not be extended.

However, the extension for call minutes is a welcome relief. Especially for the millions who rely on it for work, and communication for the period of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Google has constantly made updates to Google Meet this year to keep it competitive. The service added new features like gallery view and background blur to help it keep up with its rivals.
