Some Google Employees To Begin Sharing Desks As Company Downsize Office Spaces

Summary:

  • Google employees will begin sharing desks with coworkers to save money on office space in a move referred to as “real estate efficiency” from Q2 2023.
  • The company is downsizing offices in its Google Cloud buildings across several locations in the US.
  • Desk partners may not work at their table at the same time as Google has asked employees working in the office to alternate their days of coming in.

In a new move, being called ‘real estate efficiency,’ Google employees will start sharing desks with coworkers as early as the second quarter of 2023. The search engine company is looking at ways it will save money on office space.

According to a CNBC report, the offices to be affected by this move are Google Cloud buildings in Washington, New York City, San Francisco, Seattle, and California. These locations house the largest cloud-building teams of the company.

The above-mentioned media outlet further claimed that it saw a memo the company shared to employees that cited a need to continue investing in Google Cloud growth as the reason for its downsizing its offices.

“Most Googlers will now share a desk with one other Googler. Through the matching process, they will agree on a basic desk setup and establish norms with their desk partner and teams to ensure a positive experience in the new shared environment,” the company said in an internal briefing.

However, desk colleagues may not necessarily be at their table together as Google has asked employees working in the office to pick alternating days that they would come in.

Now, employees are only required to come into the office two days every week. And to make the seating arrangement more fluid, the company’s leadership broke workers into ‘neighborhoods’ of about 200 to 300 employees. The neighborhoods will have their own heads, to be called vice president or director, in charge of allocating space.

It appears that this new arrangement, which the executives are calling Cloud Office Evolution or CLOE, is not a temporary situation as the company is looking at it as a way to ultimately utilise space more efficiently.

Without a doubt, this new policy is a cost-cutting measure that could see entire Google buildings become vacant in the near future.
